Our curriculum

We help children grow in confidence with a curriculum designed by early years experts and shaped around each child’s interests.

A confident start to school

Being ready for school means being confident and independent. We focus on building the skills that teachers say matter most when children start Reception, such as putting on a coat, making simple choices, eating with cutlery and using the toilet independently.

Alongside these foundations, we gradually introduce early literacy and number skills through playful activities that spark a love of learning.

88%
Over the past five years, 88% of Ark Start children have met the expected level of development, compared to 68% nationally.

Ark Start pupils begin Reception with a strong foundation for early reading. They typically have more experience with writing, a solid grasp of routines and positive interactions with peers. This gives them an exceptional start in Reception.

How children learn at Ark Start

Our approach is inspired by leading early years philosophies and teaching methods, such as Reggio Emilia, Montessori, Froebel and Forest School, which put hands-on, child-led experiences and outdoor exploration at the heart of learning.

We bring this to life for each child by tracking their progress against developmental milestones, so we can understand the knowledge and skills they are building and adapt our support to how they learn best.

Taught by early years experts

Our curriculum is designed by early years experts, led by Molly Devlin, Ark Start’s Director of Early Years and an adviser to Ofsted. It’s delivered by experienced and qualified educators with at least a Level 3 Diploma in Early Years Education (or equivalent).

Personalised for every child

Every child has a dedicated ‘play partner’ who gets to know them and their family from day one, offers support whenever they need it and tailors experiences and learning activities to their interests and needs. While our curriculum is shared across all nurseries, no two settings are the same. Each is shaped by the interests of the children who attend and the community around them.

Purposeful play

Children discover, explore and guide their own play, shaped by what they’re curious about. Our teachers are always close by, gently expanding play in the moment, asking questions and bringing new ideas to help children go further in what they’re already doing.

Time to find out

‘Time to find out’ sessions introduce open-ended projects, where children are posed a question that encourages them to find their own answers. Books are the starting point for every project. Stories help shape activities, role play and the conversations that follow.

Stories and rhymes, five a day

We offer at least five story and rhyme times every day, exposing children to rich vocabulary and helping them express themselves better, which supports stronger social skills and better academic outcomes later in life.

What will my child learn?

Our curriculum is structured around the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, covering seven areas of learning. We use ‘I can’ statements to assess the developmental milestones for each area of learning.

Our values

Be brave

When we’re brave, we explore new things and always have a go. We do the right thing when no one’s watching.

Aim high

We make ambitious plans and enjoy achieving what we set out to do. And we know that we can learn from our mistakes and experiences.

Keep learning

It’s fun to learn new things and be creative. At our nursery, the children and the grown ups never stop learning.

Be kind

When we’re kind, we think about how we feel and pay attention to how other people feel. We make choices that help others.

Frequently asked questions

Who designed your curriculum?

Our curriculum was designed by the Ark Start early years experts with input from across the Ark network and based on child development evidence. We’ve also taken advice from some of the country’s leading experts and been influenced by a number of international approaches including Reggio Emilia, Montessori and Forest School, as well as emerging evidence on child development.

What extracurricular activities do you offer?

We think children should experience awe and wonder and strive to create many opportunities for this through the curriculum. Enrichment opportunities include offsite visits, for example to the farm or to the fire station, and onsite experiences such as baking, hatching ducklings or caring for caterpillars, as well as visits from community professionals including police officers, firefighters, nurses, and doctors.

Throughout the year, we also celebrate a wide range of cultural and seasonal events such as Diwali, Hanukkah, Christmas, Chinese New Year, Pancake Day, Eid, World Book Day, Anti-Bullying Week, and Mental Health Awareness events.

We also organise family events such as Mother’s Day Tea, Father’s Day Breakfast, Nursery at Night, Sports Day, and our Family Fun Day trip to the farm.

How will I know my child is on track with their learning?

Our staff are trained to understand children’s development and work closely with families to understand where children are in their learning and what their next steps are. We invite parents in every term to discuss their child’s learning and families can ask to meet their child’s play partners at any time.
