Meet Syreta, Nursery Manager at Ark Start John Archer

At the heart of our vibrant nursery in Clapham Junction is Syreta Whitter, who brings our passion for high-quality early years education to life every day. Together with her team, she creates a warm environment where children grow in confidence, build friendships and develop the skills they need for school.

‘Time to find out’: curiosity leads learning

“When we say Ark Start is more than childcare it’s because of our whole approach to learning. Our curriculum is wonderful and very heavy on books. It’s been designed by qualified teachers, and there are so many things that make it unique—like our ‘Time to Find Out’ sessions. These are teacher-led activities designed to spark their curiosity.”

“Last week, our story was The Enormous Turnip. Instead of just reading it, we brought in a real turnip. The children were able to practice pulling it and got to hold and smell a real turnip, integrating the story with hands-on experience throughout the week. We believe that children learn best through play, and we discover creative ways to make learning fun and truly engaging.”

These sessions are always flexible, adapting to children’s needs. “In the afternoon, preschoolers might be supported to write their names or take the lead building a Lego showpiece, while younger children will sit on the carpet to read a story or sing songs together.”

A team that truly cares

At Ark Start, our most experienced staff, including Syreta herself, are actively present in the rooms, working directly with the children. This means every child benefits from consistent, high-quality interaction and guidance every day.

Syreta’s own curious and enthusiastic personality shines through in her work. She loves being playful and exploring alongside the children. “Here I can plan a lesson and watch it transform into something far richer when a child’s curiosity takes the lead. I’m endlessly curious and I feel I pass that on to the children. The other day, a child brought me a snail from the garden and he was full of joy speaking about its shell.”

Syreta is proud of the whole team at Ark Start John Archer: “Every single person in this nursery cares about the children. My own niece comes here because I wouldn’t have her anywhere else. I trust every single staff member and I know she’s safe here.”

Her experience in early years

Syreta has been with Ark Start for four years, starting as an apprentice and progressing through different roles in her journey. “Every role I’ve held—Early Years Educator, Room Leader, and now Nursery Manager—has given me a firsthand understanding of each child’s journey here.”

Syreta’s path to Ark Start John Archer has been anything but ordinary. With an undergraduate degree in Criminology and Forensic Science, she spent years supporting people facing homelessness, addiction, and probation. She later qualified as a primary school teacher after completing her Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) at Kingston University. But it was in early years that she found her true calling: “I wanted to support children in a more meaningful way and teach them how to be human, focusing on all kinds of social and communication skills”.

Supporting families and connecting the community

Beyond the classroom, Ark Start plays an important role in parent engagement. “Our Family Engagement Officer, Zoe, is here to support families with everything from school applications and finding local resources to toilet training—whatever they need help with. Sometimes it’s just about being there when a parent needs someone to talk to.”

“We do home visits, host regular parent evenings, and keep an open-door policy, ensuring parents always feel connected and supported. We’re here for the whole child, the whole family,” Syreta explains. “We are not a place where your child is just looked after, it’s a place that is part of their family, part of their life.”
